Woodwise — Privacy Policy

Woodwise (“the app”, “we”) helps you identify wood from a photo and learn what you can build with it. We collect as little as possible. This policy explains what we handle and why.

What we collect

• Photos you submit for identification. When you tap Identify, the photo you take or choose is sent to our server to be analyzed.
• A local scan count. The number of free scans you have used is stored only on your device, not on our servers.
• Purchase and subscription status. Apple and RevenueCat process purchase transactions and use an anonymous customer identifier so the app can unlock Pro features and restore purchases. We do not receive your full payment details.
• Optional anonymous product-usage events. If you choose to allow anonymous analytics, we record a small set of events such as opening the app, choosing a photo source, whether identification succeeded, viewing the paywall, and starting or completing a purchase. Event payloads contain the app version, platform, and limited fixed-choice context such as confidence bucket or selected plan. They do not contain your photo, species name, free-text input, account information, advertising ID, or a device or installation identifier. Analytics remain off unless you explicitly allow them, and you can turn them off again at any time in the app under Privacy & Analytics.

We do not require an account. We do not collect your name, email, precise location, contacts, or advertising identifiers, and we do not track you across other apps or websites. Because our server is hosted on Vercel, normal network metadata such as an IP address may be processed by the hosting platform for request delivery, security, and operational logging; Woodwise does not add that metadata to its product-analytics event payloads or use it to build user profiles.

How your photo is used

Before the first identification, Woodwise asks for your explicit permission to send the photo you choose to our server and to OpenAI’s API for AI analysis. If you decline, the photo is not sent. If you allow it, OpenAI analyzes the image to identify the most likely wood species and generate woodworking guidance, and the result is returned to you. Woodwise does not store your photos — they are processed and then discarded. You can turn off AI photo processing later in Privacy & Analytics; Woodwise will ask again before another photo is sent.

Third parties

• OpenAIprocesses the image to produce the identification. Per OpenAI’s API policy, data sent through the API is not used to train their models and is retained only briefly for abuse monitoring.
• Vercel hosts our server and stores the server logs that contain our schema-limited anonymous product-usage events. We use those events in aggregate to diagnose the product funnel, not to identify individual people.
• RevenueCat manages purchase entitlements and subscription status.

We do not sell or share your data with advertisers.

Your choices, retention & deletion

• Anonymous analytics: analytics are off unless you explicitly allow them. You can withdraw that consent at any time in the app under Privacy & Analytics; turning analytics off stops future analytics events.
• AI photo processing: you can decline or withdraw permission for future photo processing. When permission is off, Woodwise does not send a photo to OpenAI unless you explicitly allow it again.
• Photos:Woodwise does not retain submitted photos after the identification request finishes. OpenAI API inputs and outputs are not used to train OpenAI models by default and may be retained by OpenAI for up to 30 days for service delivery and abuse monitoring, subject to OpenAI’s API data controls and legal requirements.
• Anonymous analytics logs:schema-limited analytics may remain in our hosting logs only as long as needed for product reliability and trend analysis, after which they expire under our hosting retention settings. Because these events contain no user, device, or installation identifier, we cannot reliably locate or attribute an individual person’s past analytics events.
• Purchases: purchase and entitlement records are retained by Apple and RevenueCat according to their respective policies and legal obligations. Contact us for a privacy request and we will handle any data we control that can reasonably be associated with you.

Accuracy & disclaimer

Identifications are AI estimates, not definitive determinations. Do not rely on them for safety, food-contact, or value-critical decisions; confirm with the end grain and a trusted reference.

Children

Woodwise is not directed to children under 13 and does not knowingly collect data from them.

Changes

We may update this policy; the “last updated” date above will change accordingly.
